Justin Bieber is close to surpassing Lady Gaga as the most followed person on Twitter.

The Marry The Night singer is currently the most-followed person on Twitter with 17.6 million, and has been most-followed for over a year. But if Beliebers have their way, Justin Bieber could soon reach or even surpass Gagas record.

The 17-year-old Mistletoe singer began the new year hitting 16 million followers, just 1.5 million followers behind Mother Monster.

Nothing is impossible. NEVER SAY NEVER!! he tweeted in reply to a fan. Thank you and all 16 MILLION BELIEBERS! LOVE U!

2012 is going to be a great year! he wrote later. All of u inspire me.

According to Digital Journal, Bieber reached 12 million followers by late August. According to the website, his recent publicity has helped him gain followers. If that is the case, Bieber will quickly catch Gaga this year, since hell release a new album later in the year and doesnt seem to have intentions of slowing down.

As of January, the top ten most-followed on Twitter are, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Shakira, President Barack Obama, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez.
